Nairobi City County has announced a delay in paying staff their July 2026 salaries, citing a late approval and uploading of the county budget.
In a circular dated August 10, Acting County Secretary and Head of County Public Service Godfrey Akumali said the delay had disrupted the processing and release of funds needed to pay county staff. He said management “sincerely regrets the inconvenience” and is expediting the release of funds.
Staff have been urged to remain patient and continue reporting for duty as the county works to resolve the funding gap.
The delay is not the first of its kind for Nairobi County. Workers faced similar disruptions in 2025, when Governor Johnson Sakaja attributed delayed pay to hold-ups in the disbursement of the county’s equitable share from the National Treasury.
County budget approvals require sign-off from the County Assembly before funds can be drawn down, and delays at that stage have repeatedly disrupted payroll processing in recent years.
The announcement adds to a string of administrative challenges facing Nairobi County this year, even as the county government continues infrastructure projects across the capital, including ongoing works in the central business district.
County officials have not given a specific date by which salaries will be paid, saying only that the matter “is receiving the highest priority.”
