Kenyan diplomat Martin Kimani has been appointed the United Nations’ Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Monday, September 14, 2026 — placing a Kenyan at the centre of the UN’s political and peacebuilding work across the continent for the first time in years.

Kimani steps into the role inside the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO), succeeding Ghana’s Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, who had held the post since May 2021. The appointment was confirmed in a UN statement dated September 14 and reported the following morning by Kenyan outlets including Citizen Digital and People Daily.

Who is Martin Kimani?

Kimani, 53, is best known in Kenya for a single moment: his February 21, 2022 address to the UN Security Council, delivered as Kenya’s ambassador to the UN, in which he compared Russia’s recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk to Africa’s own colonial border history. He told the Council that Kenya and “almost every African country was birthed by the ending of empire,” and that African states had chosen to accept borders “we did not draw” rather than fight to redraw them by force — a rebuke of what he called the “dangerous nostalgia” driving Russia’s actions. The speech was carried widely by international broadcasters and is still cited in diplomatic circles as one of the sharpest African interventions on the war.

That moment capped a four-year run, from 2020 to 2024, as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York. During Kenya’s 2021-2022 term on the Security Council, Kimani served as Council president in October 2021, chaired its Ad Hoc Working Group on Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa, and co-chaired its Informal Expert Group on Climate and Security.

What has Kimani done since leaving the UN mission?

  • 2023: President of the Executive Board of the UN Development Programme, UN Population Fund and UN Office for Project Services
  • 2015-2020: Director of Kenya’s National Counter Terrorism Centre and the President’s Special Envoy for Countering Violent Extremism
  • 2012-2015: Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN Environment Programme and UN-Habitat in Nairobi
  • 2011-2012: Director of IGAD’s Conflict Early Warning and Response Mechanism
  • Most recently: President and CEO of The Africa Center, a Washington-based policy institute, and earlier Executive Director of NYU’s Center on International Cooperation and deputy director of the Atlantic Council’s Africa Center

He holds a PhD and a master’s degree in War Studies from King’s College London, and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of New Hampshire.

What does an Assistant Secretary-General for Africa actually do?

This is the detail most of Tuesday’s coverage skipped past. The role sits inside DPPA-DPO, the UN department that leads the organisation’s diplomatic engagement on conflict prevention, mediation and peace operations. In practice, the Assistant Secretary-General for Africa is the UN’s day-to-day political point person on the continent’s active crises — briefing the Security Council, coordinating UN envoys and peace operations, and managing the relationship between UN headquarters and the African Union and regional blocs like IGAD and ECOWAS.

Guterres’s own statement framed the timing bluntly: Kimani “brings to the position 25 years of experience in international relations, peace and security, and multilateral diplomacy across government, regional organizations and the non-governmental and private sectors,” at a moment the UN is managing overlapping conflicts, political transitions and security crises across Africa — not unlike the strains Kenyan diplomats navigated when Ruto and the UN chief discussed the Haiti mission as violence escalated there.

Why does this matter for Kenya?

Kimani’s appointment adds to a run of senior UN postings for Kenyan nationals. It follows the March 2026 appointment of Monica Juma as Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, making her the highest-ranking Kenyan in the UN system and only the second African to hold that post. It also follows a string of smaller but telling wins — Kenya has previously celebrated when a former refugee became the youngest IGAD observer at the UN, and when the UNHCR commended Kenya’s refugee integration plan. Kenyan officials have long argued that Nairobi’s UN presence — it hosts UNEP and UN-Habitat headquarters, the only UN agency headquarters in the developing world — should translate into more senior appointments. Two high-profile postings in the same year is the strongest evidence yet that argument is landing.

It also lands in the same week Kenya is chasing a different kind of global recognition: World Athletics is due to announce on Tuesday whether Nairobi will host the 2029 or 2031 World Championships. Whatever that decision, Kimani’s appointment is a reminder that Kenya’s clearest wins on the world stage right now are coming through its diplomats, not just its bids.

FAQ

When did Martin Kimani’s appointment take effect?
The UN announced the appointment on Monday, September 14, 2026. The statement did not specify a start date; DPPA-DPO postings typically take effect within weeks of announcement pending handover from the outgoing official.

Who did Kimani replace?
Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee of Ghana, who had served as Assistant Secretary-General for Africa since May 2021.

Is this the highest UN position ever held by a Kenyan?
No. Kenyan Monica Juma currently holds a higher-ranking post as Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, appointed in March 2026. Kimani’s is nonetheless one of the most senior Africa-focused political postings a Kenyan has held.

What is DPPA-DPO?
The UN’s Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations — the arm of the UN Secretariat responsible for conflict prevention, mediation, and oversight of political and peacekeeping missions worldwide.
