At least eight people are feared dead following a tragic fire that engulfed the Makina area of Kibera in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Eyewitnesses report that seven members of the same family, along with a pregnant woman, perished in the blaze. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown as authorities continue investigations.
“Six individuals — a man, two women, and three children — sustained serious burns and have been rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they fight to recover,” said area Member of Parliament, Peter Orero, in a statement.
He further confirmed that a response team had been deployed to work closely with emergency services to support affected families. The assistance includes medical care, psychological counseling, and the provision of essential supplies.
Local leaders have called for a swift investigation into the incident and are urging for improved fire safety measures in densely populated informal settlements like Kibera to prevent future tragedies.
