Every Saturday, young children in Kibera gather at Nard’s art space, a haven of creativity started by visual artist Bernard Maingi. Known simply as Nard, he uses art to mentor youth, offering them a safe space for self-expression, learning, and growth. What began in 2018 turned into a vital community programme during the Covid-19 pandemic, when Nard formally launched his art classes to keep children engaged and hopeful.
Nard now teaches dozens of young artists a range of techniques—from painting to pottery—while also helping them develop life skills. Despite financial hurdles, his programme has produced tangible success: former students have found work, some now earn from their art, and one has opened their own space. Nard dreams of building a full creative hub in Kibera, proving that art can be a powerful tool for social transformation and opportunity.
