The UK Ministry of Defence is exploring the possibility of deploying British troops to Ukraine to assist in training its armed forces, according to Defence Secretary John Healey.
Healey, visiting Kyiv to discuss plans for increased support, has pledged an additional £225 million in military aid, including drones, artillery shells, and air defense systems. While he declined to provide specifics on potential troop deployment, defence sources suggest it remains an option under consideration.
Currently, Britain trains Ukrainian soldiers in the UK, with a small team of British Army medics already providing training inside Ukraine. Healey emphasized the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s position through additional weapons, training, and sanctions on Russia.
The discussions come as allies deliberate on strategies to support Ukraine in 2025 and beyond, with a focus on ensuring long-term financial and military backing.
The issue is set to be a key topic at an upcoming Brussels meeting, where Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and representatives from the EU and NATO will convene. While NATO members have avoided direct involvement in the conflict, they continue to provide arms and equipment to Ukraine.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also underscored allied unity in a recent phone call with US President-elect Donald Trump, reiterating the need to support Ukraine against Russian aggression.
