Pope Francis’ final resting place has been constructed from Ligurian stone, honouring his family’s Italian heritage. Located in the Basilica of St Mary Major, near the Altar of St Francis, the tomb features a simple inscription, “Franciscus,” and a replica of his pectoral cross. The Pope had requested a modest wooden coffin with a zinc lining, symbolising his enduring commitment to humility.
His funeral mass is set for Saturday, April 26, at St Peter’s Square, marking the beginning of the Novemdiales—nine days of mourning and Masses for his soul. These services will continue daily at 5 pm in St Peter’s Basilica, except on Divine Mercy Sunday (April 27), when Mass will begin at 10:30 am. The Pope’s coffin will be sealed during a liturgical rite on Friday, April 25, led by Cardinal Kevin Farrell.
