A dormitory at The Hill School Girls in Eldoret was gutted by fire before dawn on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, sending 340 Form Three and Four students home while police and county investigators try to establish what started it. No one was hurt. The blaze, the latest in a string of Kenyan boarding-school fires this year, is now being watched closely against the safety rules the government tightened after a dormitory fire in Gilgil killed 16 students in May.

What happened at Hill School Girls Eldoret?

The fire broke out at around 5am, shortly after students had left for early morning preparatory classes, according to Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Edison Nyale. The Standard reported that the county fire brigade received a distress call at 5:13am and had crews on scene by 5:21am, deploying water bowsers to contain the blaze before it could spread to neighbouring buildings.

The dormitory housed Form 3 and Form 4 students, and Eastleigh Voice put the number affected at 340. Because the fire started after students had already moved to class, the building was largely empty when flames took hold — the detail that authorities credit with preventing casualties. Students are believed to have lost mattresses, uniforms, textbooks and other personal belongings stored in the dormitory.

How did the response come together?

The response drew on more than the school’s own resources. Officers from Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties who happened to be lodging at the school ahead of Mashujaa Day preparations joined the Kenya Red Cross Society, county security officers and teachers in disconnecting electrical appliances and helping salvage what belongings could be saved, The Standard reported. The county’s Criminal Investigations Department has opened a probe into the cause, which had not been established as of this week.

The school has since been closed to allow investigators to work and to give the administration time to assess the damage and begin reconstruction, a step several outlets covering the incident described as indefinite pending further notice to parents.

Why this fire is being read against the Gilgil tragedy

Kenya’s 2026 school calendar has been shadowed by dormitory fires. On May 27, a fire tore through a dormitory at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, killing 16 students and injuring 79 more. Investigators later arrested eight students on suspicion of arson after reviewing CCTV footage and witness accounts, and the Ministry of Education found that a locked exit door had trapped students inside during the panic.

That tragedy forced a reckoning. Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok ordered a nationwide, 10-day inspection of every boarding school starting June 2, deploying roughly 1,000 quality assurance officers to check compliance with fire-safety rules: unobstructed dormitory windows, firefighting equipment positioned near exits, and enforced roll calls, hygiene checks and security patrols. Schools and staff found in violation were warned they would face legal action.

Date Incident Outcome
September–October 2024 Ministry safety audit of boarding primary schools nationwide Boarding sections of 348 schools ordered closed over non-compliance
May 27, 2026 Utumishi Girls Academy dormitory fire, Gilgil 16 students killed, 79 injured; 8 students arrested on suspicion of arson
June 2–11, 2026 Nationwide 10-day boarding-school inspection ordered by PS Julius Bitok ~1,000 quality assurance officers deployed to audit fire-safety compliance
September 22, 2026 Dormitory fire, The Hill School Girls, Eldoret 340 students displaced; no injuries; cause under investigation

That history is why a fire with no injuries and an undetermined cause is still drawing national attention. Uasin Gishu’s county government has separately been running fire-safety sensitisation drives in local schools this year, engaging teachers and students on prevention and early response — exactly the kind of local vigilance the post-Gilgil rules were meant to reinforce. Whether Hill School Girls had already been through this year’s national inspection, and what that audit found, has not been made public.

What happens next for Hill School Girls?

With the cause still under investigation and the dormitory destroyed, the school’s reopening will likely depend on how quickly reconstruction can proceed and whether investigators clear the site. Parents have not been given a firm reopening date publicly as of this week; the school and county officials are expected to communicate directly once the CID’s initial findings and rebuilding timeline are clearer.

Frequently asked questions

Was anyone injured in the Hill School Girls fire?
No. Officials say the dormitory was largely empty because students had already left for early morning preps when the fire broke out around 5am on September 22, 2026.

What caused the fire?
The cause has not been established. Uasin Gishu’s Criminal Investigations Department is investigating, and no arrests had been reported as of this week.

How many students were affected?
340 Form 3 and Form 4 students were displaced from the destroyed dormitory, according to Eastleigh Voice.

Is this linked to the Gilgil school fire?
Not directly — investigators have not connected the two incidents. But the Eldoret fire is being closely watched because it comes months after the Gilgil tragedy prompted a nationwide boarding-school safety inspection.

What safety standards are boarding schools in Kenya required to meet?
Under Kenya’s Safety Standards Manual for Schools and the post-Gilgil directives, dormitories must have unobstructed windows for ventilation and escape, functioning firefighting equipment near exits, and schools must enforce regular roll calls and security patrols. Schools found in violation risk having their boarding sections closed.
