By the 254.ke Newsroom.

Fred, the Maasai Mara super tusker, has died of natural causes in his mid-50s, according to the Mara Elephant Project (MEP), which announced his death on Monday, October 26, 2026. The conservation group called him an “emblem of the Maasai Mara.” Reports reviewed do not say exactly when or where in the Mara he died, and the age is an estimate.

Who was Fred, the Maasai Mara elephant?

Fred was one of the Mara’s best-known bull elephants, recognised for exceptionally large tusks and for surviving the ivory poaching crisis that devastated elephant numbers across Africa. MEP said it would honour his life with public events “in the coming days” but had not published details in the reports we reviewed.

Both Kenyans.co.ke and MalindiKenya.net quote MEP’s farewell, in slightly different wording: “He will be missed, but what a life well lived.”

What we know, and what is still unclear

Question What reports say
Announced by Mara Elephant Project, October 26, 2026
Cause Natural causes
Age Mid-50s (about 55, “probably”)
Tracking Satellite collar since 2013, in a partnership between MEP, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Wildlife Research and Training Institute
Tusk size Estimated at more than 100 pounds (about 45 kg); outlets differ on whether that is per tusk or combined
Date and place of death Not stated

The tusk weight is an estimate from earlier observations, and MalindiKenya.net notes it would need confirming through a post-mortem examination. We have therefore avoided a single firm figure.

What is a super tusker?

The term is used for elephants whose tusks are so long and heavy that they reach or scrape the ground, commonly defined as more than about 45 kg (100 pounds) each. Because poachers target the biggest ivory, very few bulls live long enough to grow tusks of that size. MalindiKenya.net, citing Africa Geographic, puts the number of super tuskers left at just over 85 across Africa, with at least 26 in East Africa, and describes the figures as approximate because no comprehensive census exists.

Why did Fred’s collar matter?

A satellite collar fitted in 2013 let researchers follow Fred’s movements for more than a decade. According to the Kenyans.co.ke report, citing Africa Geographic, that data helped shape approaches to protecting other large-tusked elephants in Kenya. For rangers, a collared bull is also an early-warning system: unusual movement can point to threats such as poaching or conflict with farmers.

Is this the second super tusker Kenya has lost this year?

Yes, according to the reports. Craig, the celebrated Amboseli super tusker, died peacefully on January 3, 2026, aged 54. Kenya’s ivory crime has not gone away: see our reports on five arrests and Sh6 million of ivory seized in poaching raids and on conservation groups’ court case over lodges blamed for blocking Maasai Mara migration routes. Wildlife agencies also face other pressures, as in our story on KWS battling wildfires across national parks. Official park information is on the Kenya Wildlife Service website.

Frequently asked questions

How did Fred the elephant die?

The Mara Elephant Project says he died of natural causes. No cause beyond that has been published.

How old was Fred?

He was in his mid-50s, about 55 by MalindiKenya.net’s estimate. Wild elephant ages are usually estimated, not recorded from birth.

Was Fred killed by poachers?

No. MEP’s announcement says natural causes, and the reports describe him as having survived the poaching crisis.

Will there be a memorial for Fred?

MEP says it plans to commemorate him and invite the public to take part. As of October 28, 2026, dates had not been published in the reports we reviewed.

What happens to a super tusker’s tusks after death?

The reports do not say what will happen to Fred’s tusks.
