Why your bank or M-Pesa rate is different
The rates on this page are mid-market reference rates: the midpoint between the prices at which banks buy and sell currency on global markets. When you actually exchange money, banks, forex bureaus and money-transfer services quote a buying rate and a selling rate on either side of the mid-market rate, and some also charge a fee. The gap between the two rates is how they make money, so the rate you get is always a little worse than the reference rate.
- Buying dollars with shillings (for travel or paying a foreign supplier): expect to pay more shillings per dollar than shown here.
- Sending dollars or pounds home to Kenya: compare the total shillings your recipient will get, after the provider’s rate and fees, not only the advertised fee. Our guide to sending money to Kenya from the US, UK and Canada explains how to compare providers.
The official Central Bank of Kenya rate
The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) publishes daily indicative exchange rates for the shilling on its website, and these are the rates most often quoted in official documents and Kenyan news reports. They can differ slightly from the reference rates on this page because they are calculated from different market data at a different time of day. For official purposes, check the CBK forex exchange rates page.
For the latest news on what is moving the shilling, see our reports on the shilling and Kenya’s forex reserves and the CBK interest-rate decision.
Frequently asked questions
How much is 1 dollar in Kenya shillings today?
The rate at the top of this page shows how many Kenya shillings one US dollar is worth at today’s mid-market rate, with the time it was last updated. The tables above convert common amounts both ways.
Why do different websites show different dollar rates?
Each source takes its rates from different market data at different times of day, and banks add their own buying and selling margins. Small differences between reference sources are normal; larger differences usually mean you are looking at a bank’s buying or selling rate.
Which rate should I use for official documents?
Use the Central Bank of Kenya’s published indicative rate, or the rate specified by the organisation asking for the figure (for example the Kenya Revenue Authority for customs, or your bank for a transaction).
How often is this page updated?
Once a day, automatically. The “last updated” time at the top shows when the current rates were published by our data provider.
