Nairobi will find out on September 15, 2026, whether it has won the right to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, a decision that would make Kenya the first African nation ever to stage track and field’s biggest event. The Kenyan capital is competing against London, Rome and Munich, with World Athletics set to announce both the 2029 and 2031 hosts together, straight after the inaugural Ultimate Championships wraps up in Budapest.

When exactly will Kenya know if it won the bid?

World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe confirmed the announcement date after Nairobi’s bid committee made its final virtual presentation to the World Athletics Council on August 14, 2026. The winning cities for 2029 and 2031 will be named on the same day, September 15, five days from today. Nairobi’s bid documents were formally submitted ahead of an August 5 deadline, and the city has now cleared every stage of the evaluation process bar the final vote.

Who is Kenya up against?

The shortlist narrowed from an initial group that included Ethiopia, South Korea and India down to four finalists, and Ethiopia has since withdrawn, leaving three well-resourced European rivals standing between Nairobi and the 2029 hosting rights.

City Proposed venue Hosting pedigree
Nairobi, Kenya Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani World Cross Country 2007, World U18 2017, World U20 2021
London, Britain London Stadium 2017 World Championships, 2012 Olympics
Rome, Italy Stadio Olimpico 1987 World Championships, 1960 Olympics
Munich, Germany Olympiastadion (under renovation) 1972 Olympics, 1993 & 2009 Worlds in Stuttgart/Berlin

London arrives with the most recent hosting experience and a stadium built for exactly this kind of event. Rome and Munich both lean on Olympic-era infrastructure and decades of major-event logistics. Kenya’s case rests less on brand-new buildings and more on a track record no rival can match on the field itself.

What is Kenya’s strongest argument?

On the all-time World Championships medal table, Kenya sits second with 182 medals — 72 gold, 60 silver and 50 bronze — behind only the United States and comfortably ahead of every other nation in the running. Kenyan athletes have won more men’s 3,000m steeplechase medals (33) than any country, and no nation comes close to Kenya’s 22 women’s marathon medals. That depth is central to the pitch: a championships in Nairobi would put the world’s best distance runners in front of the fans who follow them most closely.

Kasarani has also been upgraded specifically with a bid like this in mind, with a new synthetic track and modernized facilities completed ahead of the evaluation panel’s site visits. The stadium has already hosted a sell-out World U20 Championships in 2021, an event that launched several athletes — including Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo and Kenya’s own Emmanuel Wanyonyi — who have gone on to become senior world champions.

How far has the government gone to back the bid?

President William Ruto personally guaranteed the bid’s logistics in a video message to the World Athletics Evaluation Panel on August 14, promising expedited visa-on-arrival processing, streamlined immigration and top-tier security for visiting delegations, athletes and fans. He also committed the national government to covering the championships’ financial and organisational requirements in full.

Nairobi 2029 Bid Committee chairman Ibrahim Hussein, the first African runner to win both the Boston and New York City marathons, has led the technical case alongside that political backing. The Confederation of African Athletics has formally endorsed Kenya’s bid, framing it as a chance for the whole continent, not just Kenya, to finally host athletics’ flagship event.

What would it mean for Kenya if Nairobi wins?

Beyond the prestige, a successful bid would put Nairobi at the centre of a global broadcast and travel event lasting roughly ten days, with an estimated 2,000 athletes from more than 200 countries plus their federations, sponsors and travelling fans. Kenya has used smaller events — the annual Kip Keino Classic and last year’s CHAN 2024 football tournament — to build the operational experience it is now presenting as evidence it can run something this size. A win would also lock in further stadium and transport investment around Kasarani ahead of 2029, on top of the track and facility upgrades already completed for the bid itself.

Frequently asked questions

When will we know if Nairobi won the 2029 World Athletics Championships?

World Athletics will announce both the 2029 and 2031 host cities on September 15, 2026, immediately after the Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Which cities is Nairobi competing against?

London, Rome and Munich. Ethiopia was originally also in the running but has since withdrawn from contention.

Where would the championships be held in Nairobi?

At the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, which has undergone track and facility upgrades ahead of the bid evaluation.

Has Kenya hosted a major global athletics event before?

Yes. Nairobi hosted the World Athletics U20 Championships in 2021 and the World U18 Championships in 2017, while Mombasa hosted the World Cross Country Championships in 2007.

Would this be the first World Athletics Championships held in Africa?

Yes. If Nairobi is selected for either 2029 or 2031, it would be the first time the senior World Athletics Championships have been staged anywhere on the African continent.

For background on how Nairobi’s biggest annual athletics meet already fits into that push, see 254.ke’s coverage of the Kip Keino Classic at Kasarani and Kenya’s 12-medal haul at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The sports docket driving the bid politically is covered in 254.ke’s report on Murkomen handing the sports docket to Mvurya.
