Olympic champions Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Beatrice Chebet are set to lead Kenya’s charge at the Rabat Diamond League on May 25 as they continue their impressive 2025 campaigns.
Wanyonyi, the reigning Olympic 800m gold medallist, has built a solid foundation this season, starting with cross country victories in Iten and at the National Championships in Eldoret. He later transitioned to the track, winning a 1,500m race in Kapsabet before delivering a standout performance in Kingston, Jamaica, where he stunned a world-class 1,500m field to win in 3:35.18 and finished second in the 800m behind Canada’s Marco Arop.
Although narrowly defeated in his specialist event, Wanyonyi emerged as the overall champion of the Kingston meet, earning Sh12.9 million in prize money. He confirmed that while he’s exploring the 1,500m, his focus remains on winning the 800m title at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, having taken silver in Budapest last year.
Chebet, who won Olympic gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m in Paris, has also had a flying start to the season. She dominated the Elgoibar Cross Country race in Spain and followed it up with a 5,000m Diamond League win in Xiamen, China, clocking 14:27.12 to beat Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay. She is keen to defend her Diamond League 5,000m crown from Brussels, where she posted a lifetime best of 14:09.82 last season.
Both athletes will be aiming to extend their dominance on the global stage as the road to the Tokyo World Championships heats up.
