Kenya closed the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with 12 medals, 3 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze, finishing 12th on the overall table after a competition that ran from July 23 to August 2. As usual, athletics did almost all of the heavy lifting.
Edmund Serem won gold in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase, an event Kenya has dominated for years, and the team backed it up with a full podium sweep in the same race, taking gold, silver and bronze between them. Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang added a second gold in the men’s 5,000m. On the women’s side, Faith Cherotich won the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:01.76, a time that broke the Games record for the event.
Where the medals came from
All three individual gold medals came from distance and steeplechase events, extending a pattern that has held for Kenya at the Commonwealth Games and other major championships for well over a decade: middle- and long-distance running, and the steeplechase specifically, remain the country’s most reliable route to the podium. The steeplechase sweep was the standout moment of the Games for Team Kenya, with all three men’s medals in the event going to Kenyan athletes.
Kenya’s medal count trailed the traditional powerhouses at these Games, Australia, England and Canada among them, which is typical given the size and funding of those national programmes. But relative to team size, the return from a squad built overwhelmingly around track and field was consistent with what Kenya has delivered at recent global championships.
What comes next
With the Commonwealth Games now closed, the same core group of distance runners moves into a period that typically includes the remainder of the Diamond League circuit and early preparation for the next major global championship cycle. For Cherotich in particular, a Games record in Glasgow adds her to the conversation for Kenya’s steeplechase depth heading into that cycle, in a country that rarely struggles to field contenders in the event but is now watching a new name push into the mix alongside its established stars.
