Reigning national 400m champion Zablon Ekwam is eyeing a strong performance in today’s 200m race at the final leg of the Athletics Kenya weekend meeting at Ulinzi Sports Complex, using the event to sharpen his form for the busy 2025 season. With no 400m on the schedule, Ekwam sees the shorter sprint as a timely opportunity to test his speed, having recently clocked a personal best of 20.72 at the Botswana Grand Prix. He emphasized the importance of competition ahead of the upcoming Kip Keino Classic and encouraged fellow athletes to show up and gauge their form. Ekwam enters the race riding high after helping Kenya’s men’s 4x400m team qualify for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, setting a new national record of 2:59.29 at the World Relays in China. He also celebrated Kenya’s bronze in the mixed relay — their first World Relays medal since 2021. In today’s 200m showdown, Ekwam will face stiff competition from top sprinters including Hesbon Ochieng’, Dan Kiviasi, and Dennis Mwai. Other exciting events include the women’s 5,000m, where Rebecca Mwangi eyes another win, and a highly anticipated 800m battle featuring Olympian Vivian Chebet and Naomi Korir. The women’s 200m will also attract attention with Laventa Amutavi, wife of Ferdinand Omanyala, lining up against seasoned sprinter Millicent Ndoro.
