US President Donald Trump has expressed displeasure over recent deadly Russian missile strikes on Kyiv, urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the attacks. The overnight assault on the Ukrainian capital left at least 12 dead and dozens injured, marking the most severe attack since July.
Trump, who has been pushing for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict, stated he is applying significant pressure on both sides to reach a peace agreement. In a rare direct rebuke of Putin, Trump posted on Truth Social: “Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP!” He said he would wait a week to assess progress toward a deal, but warned that “things will happen” if the bombings continue.
The strikes occurred as pressure mounts on Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky to consider territorial concessions to Russia as part of a peace agreement. Zelensky, speaking from South Africa, said Ukraine is ready to negotiate but emphasized that a ceasefire must come first. He urged the US to be more assertive with Russia, adding that Ukraine is bearing the brunt of the war.
Tensions between Trump and Zelensky have increased, especially after Trump suggested Ukraine might need to give up land to secure peace. Trump claimed a deal is near, while US Vice President JD Vance outlined a proposal to freeze territorial lines roughly where they stand now—an idea Ukraine strongly opposes, particularly regarding Crimea.
Zelensky cut his trip short to return home after the attacks. His visit to South Africa, however, marked a thaw in relations with President Cyril Ramaphosa, who reaffirmed his country’s neutral stance and intent to help mediate the conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues seeking broader global support as its ties with the US appear increasingly strained under Trump’s new administration.
