Dozens of people are feared dead after a boat carrying over 300 passengers capsized on the River Niger in north-central Nigeria. The passengers were traveling to the village of Gbajibo to celebrate Mawlid, a festival marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad. Authorities have recovered around 60 bodies, while 150 people have been rescued alive. Many of the passengers were women and children. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined, though incidents like this are common on the River Niger, especially during the rainy season when water levels are high. Similar accidents have occurred in the area, with overloaded and rickety boats often contributing to the danger.
