ODM leader Raila Odinga has defended Governors James Orengo and Anyang’ Nyong’o over their recent comments on the broad-based government formed by President William Ruto and his party, UDA.
Speaking at a burial in Karachuonyo, Raila clarified that their remarks were in line with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between ODM and UDA, emphasizing that there is no formal coalition between the two parties. He insisted the MoU was a transparent, public arrangement and that leaders like Orengo have a right to speak based on its terms.
Raila dismissed internal party criticism aimed at the two governors, stating that advocating for devolution is consistent with ODM’s core agenda. He criticized the government’s partial implementation of devolution, particularly in health, noting that funds remain centralized in Nairobi despite responsibilities being shifted to counties.
He further stressed that ODM’s cooperation with UDA does not prevent party members from expressing independent views, comparing the MoU to bipartisan cabinet appointments seen in U.S. administrations.
