The Vatican has released images of Pope Francis lying in an open coffin at the Casa Santa Marta chapel, his former residence. Among the key figures present is Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Pope’s chamberlain, who is responsible for overseeing the Vatican until a new Pope is elected. Farrell, dressed in a red mozzetta and cassock, is seen performing the rite of the declaration of death, blessing the body of the late Pope. Pope Francis is dressed in red robes, holding a rosary, and wearing the papal mitre, along with a simple silver ring, in contrast to the more elaborate Fisherman’s Ring he often used during ceremonies.
A significant departure from tradition is seen in the choice of burial casket. Pope Francis opted for a simple wooden coffin, as opposed to the customary three-tiered cypress, lead, and oak coffins used for papal burials. The chapel where he lies is designed with triangular shapes, symbolizing the Holy Trinity, and an inscription above the coffin reads, “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.” Swiss Guards, who have protected the Pope since 1506, are stationed by the coffin. Pope Francis will remain in the chapel until his body is transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, where mourners will pay their respects ahead of his funeral on Saturday.
