Kenya’s Ebola outbreak has grown to nine confirmed cases after the Ministry of Health announced on October 20, 2026 that a 24-year-old man tested positive. He was a known contact of the first patient and was already in quarantine when he fell ill, so he was isolated and put on treatment at once. Health officials say there is no evidence of transmission outside the cluster, and Kenya remains open to travel and trade.
What do we know about the ninth Ebola case in Kenya?
Health Director-General Patrick Amoth said the patient tested positive on October 19 and was announced the next day, according to Kenyans.co.ke and TV47 Digital. Reuters described him as a close family member of the first patient. None of the three reports names the patient’s county or the hospital treating him.
One of the nine patients has died. Reuters reported that the first case, a man who travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Nairobi, died at a Nairobi hospital on October 5. Kenyans.co.ke and TV47 say the other eight patients are improving and stable under strict observation. Dr Amoth was quoted by TV47: “Our patients are improving and responding well to treatment.”
Key facts at a glance
- Confirmed cases: 9, all described as one cluster
- Deaths: 1 (the index case, October 5)
- Latest patient: a 24-year-old man, already in quarantine
- Contacts traced: 134 of 135 identified contacts quarantined
- Treatment doses received: 500

How many contacts have been traced?
The ministry says 134 of 135 identified contacts have been traced and placed in quarantine as of October 20. TV47 put that at 99.3 per cent and said it is above the global benchmark of 85 per cent. Kenyans.co.ke noted the figure could change as new cases and their contacts are added.
Contacts quarantined on October 6 are expected to go home from October 25 if they remain symptom-free for 21 days, Kenyans.co.ke reported. Communities have been asked to welcome them back.
What new measures has the government announced?
Kenyatta National Hospital’s Infectious Disease Unit now has a dedicated laboratory for routine tests on Ebola patients, so the main lab is not contaminated or overwhelmed. Emergency supplies, including protective gowns, gloves, face shields, boots, sample collection kits, diagnostic kits and thermometers, have been sent to 28 counties. The ministry also said infection-control safeguards are being monitored at quarantine and treatment centres, with no spread within quarantine facilities.
Dr Amoth said: “Kenya remains open, with no restrictions on travel, trade or public gatherings.” Reuters added that the US State Department advised Americans on October 19 to reconsider travel to Kenya and raised its advisory level, citing health risks. Only Reuters reported this.
What are the symptoms and who should I call?
The ministry asks anyone with fever, unusual tiredness, muscle or joint pains, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding to go to the nearest health facility or call the toll-free line 719. Kenyans.co.ke names the pathogen as Ebola Bundibugyo virus; the other two outlets do not name the strain.
