National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has initiated the formal vetting process for nominees to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), following President William Ruto’s submission of names for the chairperson and six commissioner slots.
The proposed chairperson is Erastus Edung, while the nominees for commissioners are Ann Nderitu, Moses Mukhwana, Mary Sorobit, Hassan Noor, Francis Aduol, and Fahima Abdalla. These names were picked through a competitive selection process guided by the National Dialogue Committee and existing laws.
With Parliament in recess, Wetang’ula invoked special provisions to allow urgent vetting to proceed. The Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs, chaired by Tharaka MP Gitonga Murugara, has until May 27 to complete the vetting. The process will assess the nominees’ qualifications, integrity, and suitability for the sensitive electoral roles.
Public hearings will form part of the scrutiny, with Parliament empowered to reject any nominee found unfit. If approved, the new team will be tasked with stabilising the IEBC amid critical electoral duties ahead of the 2027 general election and several pending by-elections.
