The National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) is now fully operational after Charles Mutuma was appointed as its Commandant. Mutuma will oversee deployments and ensure the unit aligns with national security goals, reporting directly to the Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service (APS).
NGAPU, launched in February, supports chiefs and assistant chiefs in grassroots security tasks such as tackling illegal gangs, enforcing regulations, handling gender-based violence cases, and addressing illicit brew and drug issues. It also focuses on conflict resolution and peacebuilding in areas prone to communal disputes.
Comprising officers from APS, NGAPU aims to bridge policing gaps at the community level. Public feedback indicated strong support for APS officers due to their efficiency and approachability.
Mutuma, now an Assistant Inspector General, brings extensive experience and holds two master’s degrees in security-related fields. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Security Studies.
