Plans are progressing for a 220-megawatt renewable energy facility in Meru County, combining 200MW from wind turbines and 20MW from solar panels across 100 acres. Hewani Energy’s Victor Mutuerandu stated that environmental and aviation clearances are already secured. The project, involving 32 wind turbines, solar PV, and battery storage, is expected to power over 400,000 homes by feeding electricity into the national grid via the nearby Isiolo substation.
The initiative, a partnership between Hewani Energy and the Meru County Government, involves 2,000 landowners who are now receiving title deeds after years without formal ownership. Landowners will benefit financially through annual lease payments and a 1.5% share of gross revenue, while the broader community will receive 0.5% through a trust focused on education, health, and water. The project is majority-owned by South Africa’s Seriti and Japan’s Eurus Energy.
