Kenya once again showcased its dominance in distance running at the Boston Marathon on Monday, winning both the men’s and women’s titles. Sharon Lokedi made history by winning the women’s race in a record time of 2:17:22, while John Korir claimed victory in the men’s race with a time of 2:04:45—the third-fastest ever in the marathon’s history.
Kenya also secured second and third spots: Hellen Obiri finished runner-up in the women’s race at 2:17:41, and Cyprian Kotut tied for second in the men’s race with Tanzania’s Alphonce Felix Simbu, both clocking 2:05:04. American Conner Mantz placed fourth at 2:05:08.
Korir’s win echoed the success of his brother Wesley Korir, who won the same race in 2012. The dual victories sparked celebrations across Kenya, with President William Ruto praising the athletes for their resilience and calling the achievement a national moment of pride. Former CS Justin Muturi also congratulated the team for honoring the country on the world stage.
