The government has called on the contractor to accelerate the construction of the Sh3 billion Kabonyo Fisheries Aquaculture and Training Centre in Kisumu County, which is currently 30% complete. Deputy Chief of Staff Eliud Owalo led a high-level inspection and emphasized the project’s importance as a flagship initiative under Kenya’s blue economy strategy. Jointly implemented by Kenya and Hungary, the centre will produce fingerlings to counter declining fish stocks in Lake Victoria and provide modern training for local fishermen.
The facility, set for completion by 2027, includes infrastructure such as roads, canals, and foundations for key buildings like labs and dormitories. Owalo urged timely delivery within the 30-month schedule and linked the project to broader regional plans, including upgrading Kisumu International Airport for fish exports. Leaders praised the progress, citing job creation, economic growth, and the transformation of a long-standing community vision into reality.
