Residents of Busia County have been urged to remain alert and report suspected Mpox cases to nearby health facilities, as the county leads nationally with 39 confirmed infections since December. Disease Surveillance Coordinator Evans Shiraku revealed that the figure includes three Ugandan nationals treated at the Busia County Referral Hospital, with four new cases reported in the past week alone.
Shiraku noted that awareness levels remain low, especially in subcounties like Bunyala, Samia, and Butula, where no cases have been officially reported—raising concerns that undiagnosed infections could be going untreated. Health teams are conducting screenings at formal border points, but the porous nature of the Kenya-Uganda border remains a major challenge. Residents were urged to avoid self-medication and instead seek treatment at health facilities, where specialised screening is now available. County health officers, administrators, and religious leaders are being mobilised to intensify public education as part of a coordinated response to contain the disease.
