Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic strongly criticized his players for a lackluster performance following their 2-1 defeat to Nairobi City Stars at Dandora Stadium on Thursday. The loss dealt a significant blow to their title defense, especially at a venue considered a K’Ogalo stronghold.
Speaking after the match, Mihic lamented his team’s lack of intensity and focus, particularly during a critical phase of the season. He admitted that concentration lapses cost them dearly and hinted that mounting pressure from fans may have contributed to the players’ underwhelming display.
“We didn’t show the energy needed to win. The pressure of the title race and the expectations from our fans may have weighed heavily on the team,” he said.
City Stars struck first with a fifth-minute goal from Hansel Ochieng, only for Benson Omalla to level shortly after in the 8th minute. However, Vincent Owino’s 17th-minute penalty restored City Stars’ lead, leaving Gor Mahia chasing the game.
The result not only dented Gor Mahia’s title hopes but also allowed Kenya Police to extend their lead to five points, while Tusker edged two points ahead of K’Ogalo, tightening the race at the top.
Mihic urged his players to regroup mentally and turn fan expectations into motivation, saying they owed their loyal supporters a fighting spirit.
On the other end, City Stars coach Francis Gitagia expressed joy over the victory, calling it well-deserved. Despite the win, City Stars remain second from bottom in the league.
In another match, Kariobangi Sharks defeated KCB 1-0, adding to the bankers’ ongoing woes.
