Twende Green Planet and the Secretariat of the Global NGO Stakeholders Summit are set to launch a two-day coastal restoration programme in Mombasa and Kilifi on August 27 and 28, extending the outcomes of June’s Nairobi summit into direct community action.

The Blue Carbon Legacy Action follows the Global NGO Stakeholders Summit 2026, held in Nairobi from June 24 to 26, which brought together government leaders, development partners, philanthropies, corporate executives, academia and civil society organisations from Kenya and across Africa. The summit produced four continental Action Blueprints and a Resolution to Action, alongside new partnerships with the Executive Office of the President, the National Treasury, UNEP, UN-Habitat and UNICAF, among other institutions.

Day one of the coastal programme will take place at a public beach in Mombasa, with the venue still to be confirmed with Mombasa County. Planned activities include a coastal clean-up campaign, the official launch of the Blue Carbon Legacy Programme, and community engagement booths, backed by professional media and drone documentation.

Day two moves to Mida Creek in Kilifi, in partnership with the Mida Creek Conservation Community. Organisers plan mangrove planting, a community dialogue on blue economy livelihoods, a youth and women empowerment session, and the installation of permanent site signage.

The Municipality of Mtwapa, representing Kilifi County, has committed to supporting the mangrove restoration activities planned for day two. Engagement with the Mombasa County government is under way, and organisers say discussions are ongoing with the Kenya Ports Authority on the coastal clean-up component.

Organisers have also approached Equity Group Foundation to serve as a founding strategic partner for the programme, proposing activations that would include on-site financial inclusion support for Beach Management Units and Community Forest Associations, and community health screening. That partnership has not yet been confirmed.

Summit planning documents describe the coastal programme as the first practical implementation of commitments made in Nairobi, combining ecosystem restoration, community resilience, financial inclusion and youth empowerment within a single coastal initiative.

254.ke will continue to follow the Blue Carbon Legacy Action as details on the Mombasa venue and confirmed partners are finalised.
