A groundbreaking initiative aimed at establishing a sustainable support system for women across Africa has been launched in Kenya.

Ignite Her 4 Africa is a sisterhood of emerging female leaders from various industries dedicated to empowering, collaborating, and transforming the African continent. The initiative seeks to bridge borders, cultures, and backgrounds to foster unity and uplift women.

“African women often juggle multiple roles—wife, mother, daughter, and caretaker—while facing challenges in health, economic stability, and cultural and gender biases. Balancing work and life in a fast-paced economy can be daunting, but Ignite Her 4 Africa aims to make a difference by helping women find equilibrium,” explained founder Esther Wangui.

Kenya’s first female Attorney General, Dorcas Oduor, emphasized the need for women to unite and support each other during the initiative’s launch in Nairobi. She reiterated her commitment to reforming the criminal justice sector to alleviate the struggles faced by women.

“We will initiate a review of the criminal justice system because women are disproportionately affected. Legal representation is often lacking, leading to suffering at home when men commit offenses,” said Oduor.

Proposed reforms include decriminalizing petty offenses, providing young people with second chances, introducing diversion options as alternatives to prosecution, and establishing open prisons that allow individuals to fulfill their duties while serving sentences. This initiative aims to reform the entire bail system.

“We call for reforms that benefit everyone, as improving the criminal justice system directly enhances women’s lives; we are the backbone of society,” Oduor explained.

Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo stressed the urgent need for reforms, noting an increase in femicides, especially in sports, stemming from a lack of awareness about women’s rights and legal protections, as well as inadequate facilities for minors in Kenyan prisons.

“There is still much work to be done across various sectors. As we ignite change, let’s seize the opportunity to support and uplift other women, advocate for transformation, and make a significant impact,” Odhiambo urged.

Australian High Commissioner to Kenya, Jenny Da Rin, highlighted that the world is now witnessing a rise in hardworking, confident, and professional women supporting one another after decades of struggle.

Hon. Harriette Chiggai, the President’s Advisor on Women’s Rights, emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces at home and in workplaces to combat growing societal hostility. Her office is promoting a campaign called “Safe Home, Safe Spaces” to restore warmth within communities.

The Ignite Her 4 Africa initiative is built on four key pillars: Women Industry Circles of Influence – Africa, Celebrating Rising Women Leaders in Africa, Ignite Her for Africa, and Inspiring the Next Generation. These pillars aim to unite accomplished women, honor exceptional leaders, provide training and networking opportunities, and facilitate mentorship programs for young girls and women.

“Ignite Her 4 Africa offers a platform for women leaders to share their stories, fostering a sisterhood where authenticity and vulnerability thrive. This initiative addresses the need for a reliable network across African borders, serving as a sustainable support system for professional women,” said co-founder Wangui Ngechu.
