The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has summoned officials from three counties to provide statements regarding various alleged fraudulent activities.
The commission suspects that these schemes resulted in the loss of public funds.
According to a letter obtained, 14 officials from Nakuru County have been called to the EACC South Rift Regional Offices to record statements. They are being investigated in connection with a Sh27 million procurement for sports kits and equipment. Allegations suggest that contracts were irregularly awarded to companies supposedly owned by high-ranking county officials, who then received payments for substandard equipment.
The letter, dated August 23, 2024, indicates that the interviews will take place from Monday, September 2, to Friday, September 6.
In another development, a letter dated August 30 addressed to the Bomet County Secretary summoned 13 officials to appear before the EACC from September 9 to September 13. They are under investigation for the alleged mismanagement of Sh373 million allocated for road construction equipment during the 2022/23 Financial Year. These officials are required to bring their original identity cards and certified copies of their employment letters.
Additionally, senior officials from the Baringo County Assembly have been summoned over allegations of public funds misuse. The EACC is investigating claims that the Assembly created four extra committees and split two existing committees, resulting in six new committees beyond the legal limit. This alleged misconduct was intended to misuse public funds through unauthorized sitting allowances. There are also claims of officials falsely claiming subsistence allowances for events that did not occur.
These Baringo officials are scheduled to appear before EACC detectives in Nakuru on Tuesday, September 3, and Wednesday, September 4, 2024.
