David Kibet Kemei, former chairman of Kenya Re and a seasoned financial expert, will be vetted by MPs on Tuesday for the position of Director General of the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK).
Kemei’s nomination was made last month by former Treasury CS and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
With over 33 years of experience across various industries, Kemei will appear before a joint committee of the National Assembly’s Finance and National Planning Committee and the Senate’s Finance and Budget Committee.
The committee will assess his qualifications for leading and reforming CAK, which is responsible for ensuring fair competition in the market and protecting consumers from unfair practices.
A public notice by the Parliamentary clerks states that the approval hearing for Kemei will take place on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
If confirmed, Kemei will succeed Adano Rioba, who has been acting as Director General since last year.
Kemei holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) and an MBA, both from the University of Nairobi. His career began in 1990 as a management trainee at Kenya National Trading Corporation and includes roles at Nation Media Group, Windsor Golf Hotels, the Energy Regulatory Commission, and various universities.
He has extensive experience in regulatory, financial, tourism, devolution, academia, and corporate governance sectors, including over a decade in senior management roles. Notably, his tenure at Kenya Re (2014-2020) saw significant growth in revenue and profit.
Currently, Kemei is the Managing Director of DGMB Training Solutions Ltd, a consultancy firm.
If approved by Parliament, Kemei will be tasked with overseeing CAK’s role in promoting competition, investigating market entry and exit barriers, and advising the government on competition and consumer welfare issues.
