Community groups in Kitui and Baringo counties are poised to benefit from a carbon credit initiative supported by Singapore-based investment firm Temasek, through the Global EverGreening Alliance. The project will see the planting and natural regeneration of 2.1 million trees—half of which will be in Kitui—aimed at restoring landscapes and improving livelihoods.
Speaking through Head of Policy Atieno Ndirangu during a handover ceremony for a $15,000 solar-powered water sump-well in Kitui Rural subcounty, Regional Director Jonathan Muriuki noted that the trees will help draw down carbon from the atmosphere. Fifty percent of the resulting carbon credits will go to the investor, while 45 percent will be sold on the voluntary carbon market and proceeds paid to the tree owners.
The water project, implemented by Adra Kenya under the Alliance, is expected to enhance tree survival rates and support nursery operations. Community leaders and project managers hailed the development as a major boost for sustainable agriculture and reforestation efforts in the region.
