Detectives have recovered two pistols—one suspected to have been used in the killing of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were. The firearm will undergo ballistic testing to confirm its ownership and use.
The weapons were found Tuesday night during a search in the Chokaa area of Kayole, along with a bag and shoes linked to the main suspect. Police called the discovery a major breakthrough, as initial tests show the gun was previously used in three other crimes in Nairobi and Kiambu.
Were, who was in his second term, was shot on April 30 along Valley Road. His driver and bodyguard escaped harm and rushed him to Nairobi Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
So far, four suspects have been arrested. One was found with Sh615,000, suspected to be payment for the hit. Police also recovered police uniforms, mobile phones, and ammunition from the suspects’ homes. CCTV footage placed one suspect trailing the MP before the shooting. The suspects reportedly coordinated via phone, and investigators believe a well-funded criminal network is behind the assassination.
The four suspects—William Imoli Shighali (alias Omar Shakur), Juma Ali Haikal, Douglas Muchiri Wambugu, and David Mihigo Kagame—will remain in custody for 30 days as investigations continue. Detectives are still pursuing other suspects, including a police officer believed to have played a key role.
