Violence at a Deputy President Kithure Kindiki UDA meeting in Embu County on September 12, 2026 has left at least one person dead, several injured, and a political blame game still unfolding four days later. Police say the clash began when a crowd locked out of Nembure Stadium tried to force its way in; six vehicles were torched and investigators have since named a sitting MP as a person of interest, a claim he denies.

Here is what has actually been confirmed, what remains disputed, and where the investigation stands as of September 16, 2026.

What happened at Nembure Stadium?

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was addressing a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) delegates’ meeting at Nembure Stadium in Manyatta Constituency, Embu County, on Saturday, September 12, alongside Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire. The gathering had been restricted to invited delegates and officials.

Hundreds of youths who had not been granted entry gathered outside the venue. According to Eastern Regional Police Commander Stephen Chebet, the group tried to force its way past security, was turned back, and the confrontation escalated. Officers fired teargas; some in the crowd responded by throwing stones, both at police and into the stadium itself.

The clash spread into running battles between youths, rival groups and police around the venue. Security officers evacuated Kindiki from the scene as order was restored. Six vehicles belonging to delegates were burned, with property damage estimated in the millions of shillings.

How many people died?

Police have officially confirmed one fatality. But Nation.africa reported that two Nembure families were preparing to bury sons following the clash: Mike Macharia, 23, who residents said had gone to Nembure Stadium to play football, and Moses Munene, 30, who was reportedly on his way to work when he was caught in the confrontation between youths and anti-riot police. Several other people were injured, some seriously enough to require hospital treatment. The discrepancy between the police’s confirmed toll and the two named victims described in community accounts had not been formally reconciled as of this writing.

Key facts at a glance

  • Date and location: Saturday, September 12, 2026, Nembure Stadium, Manyatta Constituency, Embu County
  • Event: UDA delegates’ meeting addressed by DP Kithure Kindiki and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire
  • Confirmed deaths: One, per police; two named victims (Mike Macharia, 23, and Moses Munene, 30) per family and community accounts reported by Nation.africa
  • Property damage: Six vehicles torched, damage estimated in the millions of shillings
  • Arrests: Several suspects taken into custody in the days following the clash
  • MP named: Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, who denies any role in organizing the disruption

Why is an MP being linked to the violence?

In the days after the clash, government allies began pointing to Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji as having a hand in the disruption. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, now aligned with the opposition, accused Kindiki and Governor Mbarire of trying to pin the violence on Mukunji, alleging the two had sent a WhatsApp message threatening the MP. Mukunji has publicly denied organizing or funding any disruption, and accused UDA leaders of repeatedly blaming him for problems in Embu, including the venue’s crowd-control failures.

Mukunji says armed police visited his home in Manyatta on the morning of Sunday, September 13, and that officers have made repeated attempts to question or arrest him since. Eastern Regional Police Commander Stephen Chebet has said officers at the MP’s home were on routine patrol, and that Mukunji would only be summoned if investigations directly link him to the violence. On September 15, Mukunji’s lawyers, Ndegwa and Ndegwa Associates, wrote to police after Government Spokesperson Charles Owino publicly referenced the manhunt, demanding clarity on the MP’s legal status. Owino has since denied that the pursuit amounts to selective justice.

None of the allegations against Mukunji have been tested in court, and he has not been charged as of September 16.

What has the government said?

The National Police Service condemned the attack on the meeting and said it would not be intimidated. “The National Police Service remains steadfast in its duty to maintain law and order throughout the country. We shall not be intimidated, and we shall not relent in the protection of life and property,” a police spokesperson said in the days following the clash. Kindiki has directed local UDA leaders to assess the damage to the stadium and surrounding property.

Why does this matter ahead of 2027?

The clash lands as political mobilization intensifies ahead of Kenya’s August 2027 General Election, and it has become a flashpoint in the wider contest between Kindiki’s camp and the Gachagua-aligned opposition for influence in Mount Kenya region politics. Commentary since the incident has framed it as an early test of how security agencies handle politically charged unrest with an election cycle approaching, and whether investigations into incidents involving government allies and opposition figures are seen as even-handed.
