A magistrate court is set to rule today on a bond application for the proprietors of a Nairobi clinic and their surgeon, who were charged with manslaughter on Wednesday.
Robert Mutula, George Njoroge, and Edna Wanjiru were remanded after pleading not guilty before Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Samson Temu. The court ordered their detention at Industrial Area and Lang’ata Women’s prisons until Thursday at 2 pm, when the ruling on their bond application will be delivered.
The charges relate to the death of businesswoman Lucy Wambui, who passed away in October 2024 due to complications from a cosmetic surgery procedure at Omnicare Medical Clinic, also known as Body by Design. The clinic is co-owned by George Wakaria and Edna Wanjiru.
Senior prosecution counsel Victor Owiti opposed their release on bond, arguing that, as owners of the facility, they could influence witnesses who were their employees. The defense, led by lawyers Danstan Omari, Cliff Ombeta, Samson Nyaberi, and Shadrack Wambui, countered that no evidence of witness interference had been provided.
Earlier, the accused had attempted to block plea-taking in the High Court, but Justice Kavedza Diana allowed it to proceed. The High Court case will be mentioned on April 8 for further directions.
