Kenya’s private universities are demanding the release of Sh50 billion owed by the national government over the past nine years. According to the Kenya Association of Private Universities (KAPU), the unpaid funds stem from government-sponsored student placements, affecting at least 34 institutions since the 2015-2016 financial year.

The prolonged delay has strained university operations, forcing institutions to seek alternative funding through bank loans and private sources. KAPU leaders, including Chairperson Prof. Stephen Mbugua and Treasurer Prof. Washington Okeyo, stress that settling these debts would enable much-needed infrastructure development and sustain higher education in the country.
