The controversy over the slaughter of a suspected stolen cow at Kaptagat Police Station in Elgeyo Marakwet has led to the transfer of all officers stationed there. Inspector General Douglas Kanja ordered the replacement of the officers as investigations continue.
The tensions began when locals discovered the missing cow, reported stolen, had been slaughtered at the station. Protests erupted, with villagers vandalizing signposts and seizing a police vehicle during demonstrations. Two officers were arrested, with preliminary investigations implicating some in the slaughter of stolen or recovered cows for sale to butcheries.
Senior police officials and a County Assembly member intervened to prevent the mob from torching the station. Authorities have deployed a special team to further investigate and have assured the public this was an isolated case.
