As the debate over the deputy president’s role intensifies, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has emphasized that the Mt Kenya region boasts numerous qualified leaders for national positions.
Waiguru asserted that the region is rich in experienced and proven leaders, and no position should be considered reserved for any one individual.
Earlier this year, President William Ruto suggested that his party might consider a female running mate in the future, aiming to fully implement the two-thirds gender rule within UDA.
Waiguru noted that the President had shown his confidence in her by assigning her to represent him at Baricho Catholic Church last Sunday, where Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was also present.
Addressing Mwea residents on Monday while distributing socio-economic empowerment items, Waiguru highlighted the numerous development projects her administration has executed, thanks to strong collaboration with Ruto’s government.
She mentioned that her administration has built 18 modern markets, with the national government investing in 11 more. Additionally, the national government has pledged to equip the upcoming Kimbimbi and Kianyaga Level 4 Hospitals upon completion.
“The President has also committed to tarmacking roads throughout the county to enhance the road network. My re-election was based on my performance record,” said Waiguru, who is currently serving her second term.
She reiterated that the Mt Kenya region will continue to support Ruto’s development agenda and warned against divisive politics, which could disadvantage the region.
Waiguru urged leaders to unite and focus on development as the 2027 elections approach. “We will stay united in our development efforts and seek votes in 2027 based on our achievements,” she stated.
Earlier this month, Waiguru received the Njuri Ncheke Council’s blessing in Meru to pursue higher political positions. She called on residents to support development-focused leaders and avoid those who only offer empty promises.
This comes as 48 MPs from the region endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their leader, expressing frustration over the lack of a proper channel to address their developmental concerns with the national government since 2022.
