TVET institutions across Kenya have launched a nationwide greening campaign, targeting 3.5 million tree plantings this rainy season, with 2.5 million already in the ground. With over 700,000 students enrolled, each learner is expected to plant and nurture at least five trees, contributing to the government’s broader plan to plant 15 billion trees by 2032. Kiambu National Polytechnic, praised for its large-scale nursery, is playing a key role in both reforestation and income generation through seedling propagation.
At the same time, the government is rolling out a new modular Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) curriculum in TVETs. Under this system, students will be trained and certified in specific skill sets every three months, enabling them to either join the workforce or continue learning. Partnerships with manufacturing industries are encouraged to support practical training. A national TVET timetable is also in development to standardize course delivery, and from next year, examinations will shift from KNEC to CDACC or National Polytechnics.
