Security forces have been reinforced in Todonyang, Turkana County, following the fatal shooting of four fishermen on the shores of Lake Turkana on May 15, 2025. The attack, believed to be a revenge mission, triggered widespread tension in the region.
Police discovered the victims—three men and one woman, aged between 22 and 32—shot at close range. The suspects are believed to have fled toward the Ethiopian border. This attack follows a similar February incident where over 20 fishermen were killed in the same region, reportedly by members of the Dassanech militia in retaliation.
The area’s proximity to the Ethiopia border and poor infrastructure have made it vulnerable to such attacks. In response, the government has bolstered Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift, launched in 2023 to combat insecurity in nine counties, including Turkana.
The operation, involving both police and military, has led to the disarming of hundreds of bandits, destruction of hideouts, and reorganization of National Police Reservists. In Turkana alone, hundreds of reservists have been recruited and re-armed to strengthen local security and enhance the fight against cross-border violence.
