Nairobi’s usual traffic flow will face significant disruptions this Sunday due to a scheduled bike race.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced that several major roads will be closed for the event. These include Lang’ata Road, Uhuru Highway, Haile Selassie Avenue, Bunyala Road, and Lower Hill Road.
The closures will take place from 6 AM to 2 PM. KURA has expressed regret for any inconvenience this may cause and encourages motorists to plan their routes accordingly.
“We urge drivers to consider alternative routes and to follow the directions of traffic police and marshals,” the notice stated.
The event, known as the ‘Grand Nairobi Bike Race,’ is one of the key races in the East African cycling calendar, attracting participants from Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Eritrea, France, and the US.
Now in its third edition, the race will see approximately 2,500 cyclists compete across six categories: a 60 km main race, a 2 km kids’ race, a 48 km para-cycling race, a 12 km family fun ride, a 48 km Black Mamba ride, and a 60 km team race for teams of six.
The main objective of the race is to encourage as many people as possible to get out and cycle through the streets of the capital.
