Tourism Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa has credited President William Ruto’s recent international state visits for a notable increase in Kenya’s tourism. He emphasized that the President’s efforts in promoting the country abroad have significantly raised its profile.
“Kenya is recognized worldwide because our President has effectively marketed the country overseas,” Ololtuaa stated. His remarks come amid criticism from some Kenyans regarding the President’s frequent foreign trips.
During a beach cleanup drive at Kongo Mosque in Diani, Kwale County, Ololtuaa urged citizens to promote peace and national cohesion, highlighting their importance for the growth of the tourism industry and other sectors.
He announced plans to collaborate with the county government to develop the Map of Africa in Tiwi, Matuga Subcounty. This natural formation resembles the geographical outline of the African continent when viewed from above and is located near Tiwi Beach, known for its stunning scenery and tranquil environment. Tourists are drawn to the area to admire its unique rock formations and enjoy panoramic views of the Indian Ocean.
Ololtuaa expressed that, with the support of local residents and partnerships between national and county governments, there are ambitions to enhance infrastructure and amenities around the Map of Africa site, further increasing its appeal to visitors. “The Map of Africa is a treasure that can significantly contribute to Kwale’s economic growth,” he noted.
Additionally, the government aims to establish a beach operators’ market in the coastal region, with designs currently in progress. This initiative will unify beach operators under a common code of conduct.
Other upcoming projects include the installation of streetlights, construction of beach access roads, and improvements to overall road infrastructure along Diani Beach.
Kwale tourism executive Michael Mutua welcomed the national government’s support, noting that the county has made significant strides in tourism through infrastructure development. He mentioned plans to introduce a beach management bill to ensure the collective management of Kwale beaches and the environment, enhancing tourism and livelihood activities.
