While enjoying coffee on a bench at Safari Park Isiolo, Patrick Maina, known as The Barman or Kissinger, envisioned his dream space—a cozy café filled with pastries, coffee, and good music. One year later, that dream became a reality with the opening of The Coffee Bench Nanyuki.

Located along the Nanyuki-Rumuruti road, just a few kilometers from Nanyuki Cedar Mall, The Coffee Bench offers a serene retreat from the hustle of town. Open from 8 AM to 10:30 PM, it features benches surrounded by flowers, inspired by Patrick’s travels as a tour guide with Open Roof Safaris.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a vibrant yellow bicycle, signaling the start of an enjoyable experience. Unlike typical restaurants, the establishment is enclosed by lush plants, providing privacy while inviting visitors in. The outdoor seating area is perfect for groups or those looking to make new friends, complete with games for added fun.

The ambiance is intimate, with music played from a small Bluetooth speaker—loud enough to enjoy, yet soft enough for conversation. Guests are encouraged to share their playlists, making it a personalized experience.

Art plays a significant role in The Coffee Bench, showcasing pieces from local artists, many inspired by their proximity to the British Army base in Nanyuki. Patrick has curated a collection of unique decor, including handcrafted whiskey displays and ashtrays. His travels have also contributed personal treasures, such as rocks and dried flowers from the Aberdares.

The bar area features two striking paintings: one of LeBron James with his wife, Savannah, and another depicting Tupac Shakur and Eminem engaged in a chess match. “I love this one,” Patrick says of the Tupac and Eminem piece, which he believes illustrates a winning position for Tupac.

The beverage menu is extensive, with beers priced at Sh350 and a selection of whiskeys and wines waiting to be explored. The cozy atmosphere is perfect for relaxed evenings with friends.

The restaurant, situated at the back of the café, provides an intimate setting ideal for romantic or solo dining. Warm lighting, floral arrangements, and candles enhance the inviting atmosphere.

Culinary Delights

The Coffee Bench prides itself on its flavorful dishes and attentive service. Ingredients are sourced from local farms, which is reflected in their menu, aptly named the Farmer’s Pocket. Diners are welcomed by the warmth of a bonfire and the lively buzz of conversation.

Their offerings include a variety of meals, juices, snacks, salads, soups, and desserts, all at reasonable prices. Patrons can choose from two-person and five-person platters, perfect for sharing.

For my birthday dinner, I enjoyed buttered fish accompanied by crispy wedges and a homemade sauce. The fish was tender, with a delightful crunch from the butter. Although the vegetables were simple, the sauce added an exquisite touch. The relaxed evening crowd consisted of groups of friends and couples enjoying the intimate setting.

On a rainy Monday, I returned for a mocha and lunch. The coffee menu, displayed on a blackboard at the entrance, caught my eye. I ordered barbecue pork with fries and fresh veggies. The dish was exceptional—the vegetables burst with flavor, and the fries were perfectly cooked. The barbecue sauce was rich and well-balanced, complementing the meat beautifully.

Every menu item is thoughtfully crafted to enhance the dining experience, with flavors that harmoniously come together.

Families and pets are welcome at The Coffee Bench, which also features a mini shop offering snacks and juices. Patrick’s vision of a chill space for good food, music, and community has truly come to life, making The Coffee Bench a must-visit destination in Nanyuki.
