Sugarcane farmers across Kenya are set to benefit from increased earnings following a new directive by the Kenya Sugar Board, which has raised the official price of cane from Sh5,300 to Sh5,500 per tonne.
Agriculture Principal Secretary Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh issued the directive to all 15 licensed millers, including newly leased state-owned sugar factories, emphasizing the need to implement the revised minimum price starting May 26, 2025.
In a communication addressed to the Managing Directors of sugar firms, Dr. Ronoh stated, “Considering the average ex-factory sugar prices from February to April 2025, the cane price has been revised to Sh5,500 per tonne. All millers must comply and ensure farmers are paid promptly.”
He further underscored the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of sugarcane farmers by ensuring timely payments and fair pricing.
This increase is part of a larger effort by the government to revamp the sugar sector through reforms that promote sustainability and equitable returns for growers.
