Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has dismissed the Nyahururu declaration in which 48 MPs appointed Interior CS Kithure Kindiki as the Mt Kenya region’s representative to the Executive. Thang’wa argued that the National Assembly is the sole connection between the Executive and the Kenyan people.
His comments follow the endorsement by 48 MPs from the Mt Kenya region, who backed Kindiki to represent their interests at the national government level. However, Thang’wa downplayed this declaration on Sunday, suggesting it reflects a lack of confidence in parliamentary leadership.
“The true link between the Executive and the people is through Parliament,” Thang’wa said. “When parliamentarians unite to designate someone else to communicate with the President, it’s a failure of duty and responsibility, and a vote of no confidence in their own leaders.”
Thang’wa specifically mentioned National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, noting that Ichung’wah frequently meets with the President and therefore doesn’t need an intermediary.
The Senator speculated that the declaration might indicate a lack of trust in Ichung’wah’s leadership. “If he sees the President regularly, why designate someone else to communicate with him? Doesn’t that suggest a lack of confidence in Ichung’wah?” Thang’wa questioned.
The Nyahururu declaration followed an earlier endorsement of Kindiki by 21 MPs from Mt Kenya East, which was then supported by over 500 elders and youths from the region.
