Kenya’s political scene is heating up as President William Ruto and his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, prepare for a high-stakes rivalry ahead of the 2027 elections. Gachagua, impeached in October, has vowed to reclaim his influence in Mount Kenya, a critical political region, and is forging alliances with leaders like Kalonzo Musyoka, Raila Odinga, Eugene Wamalwa, and George Natembeya.
During a rally, Gachagua declared, “Mt Kenya will never go to anyone cheaply,” signaling his intent to rally the region against Ruto’s administration. Meanwhile, President Ruto is working to weaken Gachagua’s support by courting allies of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, including prominent figures like Muhoho Kenyatta and Mutahi Kagwe.
Ruto’s supporters have dismissed Gachagua’s criticisms as unproductive, accusing him of lacking viable alternatives. Despite this, Gachagua’s rhetoric resonates with some voters frustrated by what they see as Ruto’s centralized governance. Gachagua has accused Ruto of sidelining Cabinet Secretaries and described the administration as opaque and poorly managed.
Gachagua also alleges that Ruto attempted to bribe him into resigning and that his impeachment was orchestrated through financial inducements to MPs. Warning that such MPs should avoid Mount Kenya, he insists the region will elect leaders who prioritize the community.
Feeling unsafe amid mounting tensions, Gachagua has hired private security and ramped up his opposition, seeking to unite disillusioned political factions. His collaboration with Odinga and Musyoka aims to form a coalition capable of challenging Ruto in 2027.
Despite Gachagua’s efforts, Ruto’s administration remains steadfast, focusing on delivering on its promises while addressing Kenya’s socio-economic challenges. Analysts believe the Kenyatta family’s potential alignment with Ruto could reshape the political landscape, possibly isolating Gachagua further.
As both leaders strategize for the upcoming elections, the rivalry is set to significantly influence Kenya’s political trajectory, with the stakes higher than ever.
