Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has announced that the Riruta–Ngong commuter railway will transport around 10,000 passengers daily, reducing Nairobi’s traffic congestion and commuter costs.
The new Meter Gauge Railway (MGR), branching from Riruta near Lenana School, will serve four stations—Riruta, Karen, Bulbul, and Ngong—cutting travel time from nearly two hours to just 30 minutes and slashing fare costs by up to 50%.
A three-kilometre bridge from Southern Bypass to Karen Shopping Centre will enhance connectivity and safety. Commissioned by President Ruto in December 2023, the project is part of a broader infrastructure push under Vision 2030 and is set for completion in 18 months.
The line is also generating employment and is expected to extend to Kiserian and Ongata Rongai to boost regional mobility.
