Farmers across the Rift Valley have flocked to Kenya Seed Company (KSC) depots and fertilizer outlets as heavy rains signal the start of the planting season. Long queues have been witnessed at KSC depots in Eldoret, Kitale, Kapsabet, and Mosoriot, with many farmers eager to purchase maize seeds.

According to small-scale farmers’ representative David Kiberenge, many opted to buy directly from KSC due to high prices set by private dealers. Initially, KSC had increased maize seed prices by over 30%, but following government intervention, the prices were reverted to previous rates. Farmers welcomed the decision, noting it would ease the cost of production.

Agriculture Principal Secretary Paul Ronoh, in a directive to KSC Managing Director Sammy Chepsiror, stated that the government’s decision to retain 2024 seed prices aligns with its food security agenda. Under the revised pricing, a 2kg maize seed packet now costs Sh420, a 10kg bag Sh2,100, and a 25kg bag Sh5,250.

The price reversal is expected to boost maize production, improve food security, and support farmers’ livelihoods. The Ministry of Agriculture has urged all stakeholders to ensure timely communication of the new pricing to seed producers, distributors, and farmers to facilitate a smooth planting season.
