Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has announced plans to consult his ODM party and allies before deciding on his next political move.
Speaking on Monday at State House, Mombasa, after meeting President William Ruto, Raila said he would soon hold discussions with his supporters to determine the way forward.
“I am going to consult widely and in due course, we will announce our next steps,” he said.
The meeting primarily focused on the recent African Union Commission (AUC) elections, where Raila lost to Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf after seven rounds of voting. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was also present.
Raila expressed gratitude to President Ruto for fully backing his campaign, emphasizing that his decision to run was personal.
“I want to thank my younger brother Ruto, who stood by me. He never asked me to run; he only supported me after I made the decision,” he said.
He acknowledged that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs facilitated his campaign by securing necessary appointments.
President Ruto, in turn, praised Raila, stating that his candidacy united Kenyans across political divides and that he represented the country well.
Raila also dismissed reports that Sh13 billion was spent on the AUC campaign, clarifying that funds were used mainly for travel and logistics, with many countries providing accommodation.
