Police in Nakuru and Nyandarua are investigating the murder of Catholic priest Fr John Maina Ndegwa, whose body was discovered with serious injuries by the roadside in Kikopey, Gilgil, over 50km from his parish in Igwamiti, Nyandarua. He was rushed to St Mary Hospital in Gilgil but was declared dead on arrival.
Authorities believe he was killed elsewhere and his body dumped at the scene. His vehicle, a Subaru, is missing. A homicide unit has joined the investigation, tracing his last known movements and interviewing individuals who last interacted with him. An autopsy is expected to provide more clarity.
Fr Ndegwa was well-regarded in his community and had recently hosted dignitaries, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. His death has left many in shock, with tributes pouring in from church leaders, local residents, and political figures. A memorial prayer was held at his Igwamiti parish.
