Rwanda’s incumbent President, Paul Kagame, is poised for a decisive victory in the upcoming elections, potentially securing his fourth term in office. According to partial results released by the National Electoral Commission, Kagame is leading with 7,099,810 votes, accounting for an impressive 99.15% of the ballots counted so far.
His closest competitor, Habineza Frank, has garnered only 38,301 votes, or 0.53%, while Mfayimana Philippe trails with 22,753 votes, representing 0.32%. The Commission indicates that 78.94% of the votes have been tallied, and the vote counting process continues.
Diane Rwigara, a prominent critic of Kagame, was again barred from participating in the election, having faced disqualification in 2017 as well. According to Rwanda’s electoral regulations, the NEC is expected to announce the final results for both the presidential and parliamentary elections by July 27, with provisional results due by July 20.
Kagame has been in power since 2000, following his rise to leadership after his forces ended the 1994 genocide that claimed around 800,000 lives. He has consistently dominated elections, receiving over 90% of the vote in each election cycle, including a staggering 99% in 2017.
