In a strong show of unity during President William Ruto’s tour of Nyanza, several regional leaders aligned with Raila Odinga moved to quell rising political tension and reaffirmed their commitment to the bipartisan pact between the two leaders. During a church service on Sunday, key figures—including Raila’s brother Oburu Oginga, Treasury CS John Mbadi, Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, and a host of ODM MPs—publicly supported the deal and even hinted at backing Ruto beyond 2027.
Despite growing disquiet within ODM over the alliance, especially after the recent assassination of Kasipul MP Ongóndo Were, these leaders praised the collaboration as a vehicle for development. They highlighted major ongoing and planned investments in infrastructure, energy, and local markets, with Ruto pledging over Sh5 billion for projects across Nyanza.
President Ruto emphasized equitable distribution of resources and reiterated his willingness to work with former political rivals for the nation’s progress. He also assured that Were’s killers would be brought to justice, while Interior PS Raymond Omollo called for restraint in political discourse during the investigation.
While some leaders like Siaya Governor James Orengo expressed skepticism, the majority, including MPs Junet Mohamed, Paul Abuor, and Elisha Odhiambo, rallied behind Ruto. They described the broad-based government as a long-term commitment and praised Ruto and Raila as visionary leaders.
